weird noise need help

I have a 1995 4runner with 225k on it. I have had this truck for four years now and its always had this bizarre noise that i could never figure it out. If i don't allow the truck to warm up before i drive it(only during the winter when its really cold) then this really loud whinning noise starts when i accelerate and gets worst as i go faster. The noise seems like it coming from directly behind my speedometer and the rest of my gauges in my dashboard. Any thoughts on what it could be and how to fix it?

Do you have a 22RE? I have that noise too, it seems like a constant whirring noise. It gets really bad on the freeway, esp. at high RPM. Drives me crazy, cannot pin point it.

It's Toyota's way of telling you to warm the engine up like you should before you drive it. If you don't then you will have more problems than just a whirring sound to worry about.

I just drove 600 miles on the freeway and it made the noise the entire way. For me it's a constant noise, warm or cold. It's probably not the engine because I can't hear the noise when the hood is up and I rev it. I swear it comes from right behind the dash near the passenger side.

yeah i know exactly what you mean its not coming from the engine but somewhere behind the dash. Now that my truck has more miles on it it seems as though it will do it quietly now even when its warmed up

Just a thought, but on my runner the Speedometer cable drys out and gets noisy when it's cold out. Makes a whirling noise, sounds like it's coming from the front, but is actually coming from the dash gauges. Feel the gauges and see if it's making a vibration

I'm with modlite. My speedo cable does the exact same thing. I can smack the top of my dash above the gauges sometimes and it'll stop. Lol. It only does it when it's realllly cold outside. Like below zero.

if it's the cable then take the gauge assembly out and re-grease it.

Pulling this thread back up. Mine started this noise yesterday, while it was warm. 35+ it gets worse. Did it for 15 minutes and stopped. My truck has no spedo cable (has spedo sensor). I have been working on these trucks for years and never encountered this.

I would think the obvious too...gauges.
Is the heater fan on when it happens?
The only way to find out for sure is for someone to get in the dash and pin point where its coming from, and then let everyone else know.

At first thought it was the fan, turned it off and still had noise. I put 130 miles on it today, never made a peep. My cousin said his did it a few months ago, and hasnt done it again

I had a really annoying whining noise start 3 days ago, sounds kinda like a supercharger would (i wish i had one), it turned out to be the tension pulley that the air-con belt runs through. Since i never use my air-con a just took the belt off. Noise gone. (it was the bearings in the pulley by the way, that was whining)
