I've searched high and low for info on this. Either I don't know how to navigate forums or this has never been discussed.

I have an 88 P/U 22re. I went out with some friends about three weeks ago. I followed an 85 P/U and a Cherokee around all day. I hit every puddle/pond as they did. However once I come out the other side it seems like i'm firing on only 3 cyl. I'm sure this is possible. I really want to fix this problem. After a little bit of time I pick up the cyl again but it is a dog on only 3 cyl.

Please advise.

Do you know the extent of the damage your truck receives every time its driven through body of water?

It does alot more than just ruin the distributor... You should avoid it if you can. but if you're going to be driving through water, I'd suggest doing some differential breather extensions and a snorkel.

 

Algranger did a write up on this. Use the advanced search feature. I think it's in his "uncommon mods" thread or "hillbilly mods" thread. Something along those lines.

 

And make sure you check and/or change fluids after each trip. Grease the drive-line, DONT FORGET THE SPINDLE!! Thats the part that gets the most water.

I really dont think you have just gotten water in the dizzy. Its probably something else. But, a good thing to do for the dizzy is put a little RTV around the base of the cap to seal it and put a little breather extension.

Important note...The puddles/ponds and creeks I cross are not deep...maybe just barely to the bottom of the fan. Never have i taken water in the cab. Hell, i pressure washed the front suspension and the thing ran on three cyl for about 10 min.

 

Toyota makes/made a rubber boot for the distributor; I checked a couple years ago and you could still buy it then, but it's expensive--something like $80-$90 or more.

 

that boot is only a splash guard.

 

both on my 92 and my 87 i have a little rubber cover that snaps over my dist to prevent water. No means water proof, but helps. one came on my 87, then found another one in a junk yard. I would check your plug wires. those could be getting wet and shorting out.

 

My father used to put a latex glove over his distributor, with the wires coming our the fingers
