Hi,
found this place and hope someone can help me out.

i have a 93 xcab 4wd 4cyl 5spd and i decided to wash the engine today because it was gnarly. i bagged the distributor and the air filter area to keep them dry and now when i go to start the truck, it starts, but doesn't stay running very well. it starts up great then starts to sputter and idle really low. when i give it gas, it dies. i didn't mess with anything under the hood when i cleaned it and used very little spray of water. i did, however mess with what i assume is the MAF on top of the air filter assy. i had bought some MAF cleaner to clean our other car's MAF. i messed with my truck's by removing the 2 horizontal screws that bolts the wire plug on the air box in place. i only pulled it out partially when i discovered it was a bunch of prongs with connectors instead of a sensor deal. any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

This happened to me after mudding one time, turns out I was practically empty on gas and would start but when I gave it gas it died...probably not your problem but worth a look lol

 

you broke the wires inside the Airflow meter, methinks. Time to replace it.

 

Definately more likely lol

 

maybe a little water down in the sparkplug holes??? I've done that one time.

 

so that WAS what i thought was the air flow meter...i assumed it was the same thing as our corolla and tried to take it out like the other one, only the truck's remained connected with wires inside vs the car's which had a removable connector and a plug in deal.

with a possibility of damaging it, is this the sole reason for it acting up like this? and if so, what part would be the one needing attention? the male, wired end, or the part inside of the aluminum housing?

 

If you broke the leads to the PCB board, it should be a relatively easy fix. No need to buy a new VAF box. Below is a picture of the inside of mine. You should be able to solder the leads back to the board, saving much $$$.

 

ok, so i did some searching and found it was a bad idea to take the 2 screws out...

i did, however, see that some people soldered something inside....did they cut the siliconed plate off to access these electronics? i really need to get this fixed asap...

ok, thanks guys, i got it fixed. thanks the above image i found my problem to be right here:


i guess when i pulled out the plug and put it back in, the little tab was on the wrong side(left side) of the swiveling arm and was keeping it from turning when more air is going through the tube.

 

Good to hear you got it fixed. Nice when you don't have to pull out the wallet, isn't it?

 

Nice, Thats good considering the price I got from the dealer was almost $800.
Luckily, I found 1 at a bone yard for $25.
