Weigh your truck with what you travel with, including passenger(s). Any dump, truck stop, whatever, will have scales.
Remember, that pull rating is only for the first wrap of cable.

stock pickup? mines 3,300lbs empty + toolbox + 2 people = maybe 4,000
if you bury it in thick mud up to the frame you might need as much as 3x the trucks weight in pulling force. 6k should be fine for most situations, and you might consider getting a snatch block for more extreme situations.
the other thing to take into account is that with the winch at max load the line speed is way slower than at half load...especially on the cheaper winches. some cheap winches have line speeds of like 4ft/min at max load..run that through a snatch block and you cut the speed in half

I wouldn't pay more than $250. It's really on the small side of acceptable & not worth hassling or negotiating beyond that. For $350 you can get into the 8k range (used). Personally I'd rather have SOME sort of winch than none. Even if it saves you once & took an hour to do it, it's cheaper than a tow. I'll be slapping an old 4k winch on a trail-only Samurai we're building cuz it's free
