W56 Transmission Rebuild Questions
Hi all. Tore apart a transmission I found for a pretty good deal at a junkyard. I have it as a back up because I think the one in my 86 pickup is about to go 🤷♂️
When I was cleaning the cases and inspecting the gears I noticed the "Reverse Idler" and "Reverse Gear" look pretty mucked up. I don't know if this average wear and tear or if this issue should be addressed. I looked online and it seems that those gears are unavailable in any kind of remanufactured form.
Am I making too big of deal of this? I posted some pics of everything so maybe some of the members with more experience can chime in?
I think there was a recent rebuild done on it. Or someone at lease split the cases. There was an RTV type sealer used with gaskets and silicone around the fasteners that joined the cases together. I got everything cleaned up just waiting for some input before I decide the next step. Thanks!

Those gears look fine, so long as there are no teeth on either one with very large pieces of tooth face missing.
Straight cut gears like this are made with some pointing on the tooth ends when new, and they take a fair amount of nicking in service because there is no synchromesh.
Yours don't look more than ordinarily abused. They are fine

There’s a bearing in the transfer case, I wanna say one on an idler gear, that tends to seize or get rough from lack of use if the driver rarely using 4wd.

I have the T case sitting on a shelf right now..As soon as the snap ring for the input shaft (I destroyed it) gets here, which should be today or tomorrow, I'll have the trans back together and tear into the T case. I want to have these ready to go "just in case" 😂😂
