W56 oil change help.

When I went to change the oil on my w56 transmission my chiltons manual told me my filler plug was on the passenger side of the tranny, so I removed a large 24mm bolt located just under the shifters only to immediately realize it wasn't the fill plug. The bolt was smooth and tapered on the side in the tranny with a wear spot on the end. What is this bolt for, and did I mess up anything by removing it? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
