VALVE TAP .. distracting and embarassing
#62
I dont want to read this whole thread >.< so if someone mentioned this sorry. My friends 454 with 5,000 miles got a tap so we adjusted the rocker arms like 3 times and it never went away so we tore into it and we flatened a cam, we did it again 10 hours later. Did you put in a big cam? If so it could be that it got a big lodu annoying tap cause the cam itself was hitting the lifters.

no, no one mentioned that ... thanks for the input. But i got a stock cam, i dont want a different one. Ive driven 22rs with stage one and 2 cams, i disliked them both. The stage 1 gave a minimal difference in power, and the stage 2 gave the driver crappy gas mileage as well as loud valve seating and rough idle. I can turn my 31s over just fine. Speaking of which, the cam is mathematically calculated to mechanical timing and therfore performance. Ive seen the torque gains, the HP gains, and when it gets to the wheels in 4x4 low ... it really doesn't make a difference. I can climb the same cliffs and grades as the others.
.... New problem emerging though. I stopped the rear main seal leak with a little ATF in the oil, but now my rear DIFF is making a waka waka waka sound at jogging speed. You feel it in the ride more than hear it from outside. It sounds like the limited slip may be acting up. Any ideas??

i have a 93 pickup 22re and i just finished putting a whole new shortblock in this truck but i also replaced the cam and the rocker arms along with this Because i noticed the cam and rockers were wore into. Thinking it was just the lack of oil from the previous owner running the truck out of oil. I ran this new motor for almost 1000 miles adjusting the valve clearances twice once cold and once hot 8 thousands intake and 12 thousands exhaust . I still had this very noisy valve clatter so the third time i went to adjust this i noticed that the camshaft ONLY ON EXHAUST SIDE lobes were getting wore into again, My timing was set manually and seems to be alright so i then I put air into the cylinder and pulled the valve spring apart and evertything looks fine. Im also getting good oil pressure up there so its not lack of oil. Also i have good compression on all 4 cylinders
What could be causing my cam to wear only on the exhaust side like this im stumped on this one ?

well guys, i think i have isolated the single valve that is tapping. I took my stethoscope to the valve cover and could hear it ticking nice and rythmically on number four intake side. The valve adj. screws don't come in for a week so that screw is gonna get switched w/ number one to see if i located the problem. $ 30 bucks for all 8.

brand new rebuilt 22re ... long block, overbored new valves the works. Great compression, 170 PSI across all 4, and the most annoying valve tap. From start up and through entire drives. IT WILL NOT STOP. Ive adjusted the valves once when cold, once so far when hot. And i still got that tap. Any ideas? the head has been resurfacesd a few times, and if any more history is needed to get to the bottom of this ... let me know.

So look at teh cam lobes for signs of wear and check each rocker to see if the pads are bonded properly. The one rocker that did not come completely apart was able to move the pad with some force by had but it appeared to be perfect when just holding it in my hand.

no id doesn't look good. And thanks for all the advice. I did chace my tap down ... and i started another thread that outline the problem. I had a valve guide break on the intake side in number three. it explains the tippy tap, the smoke, the rich mixture, the poor fuel economy, rough idle, and fouling plugs.
While the rockers were off, i didn't see anything that looked that bad, and now the tap is more of a rattle (like there is a marble in the cyllinder) and it is more often than not, quiet.

, maybe you have a stuck ring on a piston from all that bad burn going on with your guide being broken , could be a little piston slapping going on possibly , run some seafoam in your crankcase and intake and see if it helps(frees anything up)
............maybe ............I would probably pull the head if it was me because I would be scared it was something that would turn bad on me but then I am a bit paranoid when it comes to that

thanks for the ideas. But i dont really know this one has me stumped. The only thing i can think of is the shop who did the head job b4 i got the truck either 1-put valves and springs from a different year in or 2-put a rocker arm assembly from a different that happens to be slightly just a little different.....because when i put the second cam in there i made sure to plastigage the journals and they all came out great so im not sure. Does anyone know if there is a slight different from year to year of the valves and components or the rocker arm assembly?

Other than that I guess take the cover off and fire her up and get messy with the stethoscope and zero in on the sound
