Valve Tap
I recently changed over to mobil 1 (10w-30), and a purolator pure one filter. I let it sit for a couple days, and when i started it up the valve tap seemed way louder than usual. Any ideas as to what my issue could be? Im thinking perhaps the oil filter is too restrictive, and maybe i should switch to a less restrictive filter? Should i re-adjust the valve clearances to smaller gaps because im running synth? any ideas?

just rolled over to 86k this week. a 10w30 synth is the same thickness as a 10w30 dino. I've been running 10w-30 with no issues since i bought the truck at 83k. I changed to valvoline dino right after I got it, and just switched to mobil 1 this week. I havent listened to it with the hood open so perhaps i should listen and see if its coming from the fuel rail side? I know most of my cold valve tap from before was coming from the exhaust side

I don't know what the heck it's with mobile 1, but my valves always got nosier with that stuff. That includes my honda accord as well. I bet their oil is a little on the thin side.

What oil filter were you using before? Are you sure you have the correct filter? Is the engine noise normal after the oil pressure builds up? Sounds like maybe the anti-drainback valve in the filter isn't working properly...did you only change oil & filter? No other modifications?

sorry i was out of town for 2 days. I dont know about warm as i havent had the truck warmed up since the day after i changed it. I was using the regular purolator before, and i switched to the pureone. I never had any issues with the old filter. I did start it up today, and it didnt sound as loud. Maybe its just in my head. I should have a chance to go warm it up sometime early next week (I've been in freshman orientation all this week)

I second the suggestion to get a mechanics stethoscope. They're only about 8 bucks or something at Harbor Freight. They can really eliminate the guesswork from diagnostics. I think my concern about valve noise for years was misplaced. Our injectors make an inordinate amount of racket.

yeah thats what im thinking ill do sometime early next week. Im still in the process of finishing my orientation week so I haven't had any time to drive the truck aside from moving it every 48 hours so i dont get a ticket

sorry to revive an old thread but...i have this same tapping sound comming from the driver's side of my engine. its a newly remanufactered engine with around 15K miles on it. I already unplugged the #2 and #6 cylinder injectors one at a time to see if it was the injectors. no change. i didnt have time to get to the #4 but do you think this could be it or am i plagued with another bad 3.0?

I've got a 3.0 with 158k miles on it and it taps really bad from the drivers side too. I'm pretty sure it's the valves since it sounds metallic. Is yours a metallic rapping sound? I'm just gonna run it till it blows then sell it for parts and buy a new vehicle. I'm never going to own another 3.0 again.
