Actually, this....none of this....has any effect on valve adjustment. The relationship of the rocker arms and rail to the head is not changed at all by this.

So, the valve clearnances should not have changed unless the rocker arm springs were damage or the adjuster studs were tinkered with.

And, I still say if the valves were not a problem before, they're not the problem now. But, WTH....if you've not adjusted them in the last 30k miles, it's time anyway.

Wow, thanks all. Ok, here's the latest developement. I replaced the fuel filter on a suggestion from a friend...and it helps a lot. I also fiddled with the distributor adjustment. I also found a pretty nice crack in my exhaust, right as it bends to go underneath. I just put some jb weld on it and will see if that holds. If not its time for new.

Also, I don't know about headers but i think i want them. Any suggestions? Should I do the headers and new exhaust at the same time?

Oh....didn't realize you a carb. Ha-ha....silly me.

Personally, I don't have much faith that JB Weld is going to hold. So, if you want to put on a header, it's a good time for a better flowing exhaust. However, a header alone's not gonna do much for your performance.....if that's what you're thinking. Doesn't make it a "bad" idea. They're just expensive if you're not going to get much out of it. Unless, you plan on making other engine mod's at some point?

BTW, where's your timing set at it and where was it before? Did you bother messing with the valves?

Well, the long and short is that yeah I do want to do more to it but I don't know what 'more' is. I never really did much work on cars/trucks before. But I couldn't afford to take it to a shop and figured it out...slowly. I found that now that's all I want to do. I love working on my truck. I am not sure what the timing was before because I didn't know enough to mark it. now I am at 0 all though I just did the distributor by ear after I got it in right. It took a few tries. And, I haven't had the time yet to do the valves, maybe tonight.

buy a timing light before you buy headers, it'll do you more good LOL.
