Valve Adjustment Confusion
#23
I also heard that the most problematic toyotas that went into a local shop here always had those Effin Bosch plugs. I went to the dealerary and bought some sparks from them. They were already set to the right gap. Had no probs with them, and they are cheap.

I'm telling you, try the Lucas 1st. It took away my tick rightaway. What you got to loose, $10.00 and 5 min. of your time. But it is up to you what you want to do.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me. Valves especially in the 3.0 get tighter with age (hence they get burned by hanging open a little) and when valves get tighter they also get quieter, much quieter. I would consider injector noise which they have plenty of or most likely an exhaust leak.

My truck has a LOUD tick and im wondering if it is a valve, and how difficult it is to adjust them. I called around and Im not happy with what people are saying about valve adjustment. Called 5 mechanics, 2 said they wouldnt do it, 1 told me they cant be adjusted, 1 said drive it til it blows, the other said around $2500.. Unbelievable. Its getting louder and louder. What a real bummer. I read some previous posts on here but am a little confused on the difficulty of this??? I do have a Chiltons, and after reading it doesnt sound THAT bad..Anyone know any good Toy mechanics around Akron/Cleveland Ohio area? I think I may need a miracle.. I would kill me to sell my truck. Hail Mary. ANY Help is greatly appreciated..

It's unlikely that valve clearance would be the cause of your noise with a 3vze.
You say that you can tell it's getting worse so that is also an indication that it is not the valves.
A lot of 3vze engines suffered some bearing and rod damage when there head gaskets failed and sometimes it is not evident until much further down the road. sometimes 10s of thousands of miles later.

I read through this thread kinda quick and maybe I missed it. But, you might want to do a little exploring with a mechanic's stethoscope. It definitely helped me to differentiate valve noise from injector noise. Good luck!
