Why is it that when people adjust the valves cold, the clearance gets larger as it warms up? I've seen numerous posts about adjusting the 22r's valves to .007 intake and .011 exhaust and when they are checked hot, they become .008 and .012 It makes no sense to me lol. As metal heats it expands and the tolerances should be tighter.....

Beats me why. We need someone with a degree in metallurgy.

I always set them Cold .007 and .011,

Problem setting them hot is
A: It burns.
B: by the time you get to the last Valve the engine is much cooler that when you did the first valve.

 

I jusr checked with my machinest and he said to adjust them to 7 &11 cold.

 

You just throw a blow torch on them for a few seconds & they are hot again!!

i've had bad luck doing em cold. best i've found is .007, and .011 hot, and trust me ive adjusted em atleast a half dozen times in the year ive owned the truck

 

Mmmm....petro flambe. I always keep a set of Craftsman skewer's handy for just such occasions...metric, of course.

 

Good question. I've always done 0.008/0.012 hot on the stock engine. I put an Engnbldr cam in my engine and the numbers Ted me are 0.007/0.011. I did them to these numbers hot and they will pass the feeler with resistance and the next size up won't go (for example, 0.007 is snug, 0.008 won't go). I have no idea if that is right, but that's what I did.
