v6 question!

Is the crank pulley falling off normal with this motor? My buddys runner has lost the pulley 3 times all but once with out messing the pulley up. This time the keyway sheered and the bolt is mia and needs a new pulley. Were looking for a v6 one cause the jerk sold him a 4cylinder one as a v6 one gotta replace it all and want it to stay so he can finish a run with us.

Definitely not. This is the first I've heard of it. How tight is your buddy getting that main bolt? It's supposed to be torqued to 181 ft/lbs.

I don't know if it's normal but I had to replace my crank pulley at 186,000 when the timing belt was done because the keyway was all wallowed out and the key was in 2 pieces. '91 4 runner 3.0

It's been happening a lot on the 3.4 V6, mostly after a timing belt change when the bolt doesn't get retorqued to spec. Toyota had a problem with them coming loose from the factory on the early 3.4 engines but after a few years they changed the bolt torque spec from 180 ft-lb to 217 ft-lb and that took care of the problem. The torque spec change didn't make it into some places of the FSM, so even the newer FSMs (2001-2003) have the wrong spec in one section and the right spec in another. Also the main computer data service that most pro mechanics use also has the wrong torque spec, so many have had the problem even though they used a mechanic to do their timing belt change.

Of course the worst is the guys that don't have a crank holding tool or don't even use a torque wrench. Mike @ ORS recommends using red locktite on it as well.

I didnt have a TQ wrench when I did mine but none the less I torqued it down as hard as I possibly could and used blue lock tite on it. Hasnt budged at all.

(My tq wrench only goes to 150 dang nib it!)

I found this one at Home depot for a pretty good price, has a nice long handle and goes to 250 ft-lbs:

Hmmm....some reason I couldn't view the pic at webshots. Surely that bar will be advertised on the Home Depot website. What was the price on that puppy?
