used 22RE question

I found a complete used 22RE that has a claimed 40,000 original miles on it but its from an automatic, guy is asking $900 for it, if the milage is accurate is this a good deal? Im assuming it would probably need a gasket kit thrown at it before putting it back in service, would you go ahead and put a head gasket on it while it was out since it would be much easier or just install it and run it? Anything to check if I go look at it tomorrow? Thanks Matt

I would do a leak down test on it first.

Absolutely NO on the head gasket . The cylinder head and engine block machining, and head gasket and assembly by Toyota, is as good as it gets. A 40,000 mile engine that has been opened up would be out of the question in my opinion. Don't know what you mean by "...need a gasket kit thrown at it..." Shouldn't need any gaskets. My $0.02

I think that you'd be ahead by putting that $900 toward rebuilding your existing engine, if it turns out to have serious issues. Do some real diagnosis before deciding on anything.

You might well by buying another boat anchor, unless the used engine has a guarantee that you really have a chance that you could collect on.

If you rebuild yours, you'll know what you've got.

I agree about the head gasket, I use the term "throw a gasket kit at it" in my shop when I rebuild VW and motorcycle engines especially those that have just been sitting for years, for this 22RE, even if its a 1995 its still 22 years old and with 40,000 miles on it, it would be much easier to buy a valve grind kit and do just that while its out and on a stand, replace all of the gaskets and seals before putting it in only to have it seep and drip all over the place!
