Finding an R151 five speed is gonna be like the proverbial hen's teeth

The factory CT20 turbo is a known week point.
A guy at work replaced his with a Garrett turbo on his 86 Turbo Auto, I think he paid $4500 for his

I own one of these, here's my advice: don't do it. The turbo can be replaced, but your exhaust manifold is likely cracked underneath and guess what? You can't get the part. All of the used ones are cracked in the same spot. LCE had a nice cnc machined one for 700 bucks. But that's only the start of your problems. Your afm, computer, and some of the hoses and sensors are specific to the turbo model. Toyota is rapidly discontinuing the parts, and there are very few of these in the junkyard. Think of all the normal everyday problems you will have with an old rig, then add in the turbo specific stuff that we'll leave you scrambling for rare parts and for creative solutions to work around. All for a slight boost in horsepower, when the rig is actually running. My advice is to find a non turbo model, and be happy with it.

Red face

All I can really say is good luck !!

Could this be a case of quite a few clueless people owning this poor 4Runner.

It could be the seals in the Turbo going bad pushing oil into the exhaust side.

If they go Kaboom all those metal parts get pushed into the engine .

Well unfortunately, your advice came about 2 hours too late. I ended up buying it. I hope it's not a lost cause trying to fix the engine. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I'm hoping that while difficult to find parts or workarounds, it won't be impossible. For $4000, I was told by someone that knows older Toyotas well that with the low miles and the aesthetic condition of the interior and exterior, I could probably do nothing and sell it for at least that if not a few thousand more. But in all honesty, I love the car and I really want to fix it.

Yeah, I'm not driving it anymore until I get the turbo situation sorted out.

You can swap engines with a 3rz or a 5vz when the time comes.

Will swapping the engine out for a different one mess with the totally awesome digital cluster?

Don't know for sure, but I would keep the digital cluster if possible.

I'd start here. This is the best option for the turbo. Look around on that site though, if you're willing to get a different exhaust manifold, there are some other options including a top mount. I have a turbo Tec kit (not recommended), and the factory replacement manifold from this site.

Thanks for that info. I actually applied to join the 22rte forum today and sent my email for verification. I'm just waiting to be accepted. That link to the turbo is a nice option price-wise. A friend of mine sent me to this link....

I take it that removing the turbo and running the vehicle without isn't an option? How damaging is it to drive the vehicle periodically until the turbo issue is resolved?

That's a nice turbo for sure. But unless you plan on going with a stand alone fuel management system, your efi / computer won't be able to support the change in fuel requirements. You need something closer to the stock turbo. The gt 25 is a good match. As far as running it for now, really depends on what is going on with it. If those turbo vanes break, you're sucking metal right into your intake valves. If it's just leaking oil past the seals, maybe you're alright.

I suppose you could take the turbo off, and try to scab the exhaust together to that point. More than I'd be willing to fabricate.

Aside from taking it to a mechanic, is there any quick way to make sure it's not sucking metal and just leaking around the seals? I assume sucking metal into the intake valves would be noisy. To be honest, I'm not sure how much the previous owner knew/didn't know about the vehicle. A number of things that he claimed didn't work actually work. (Cruise control, rear window when you put the key in the back door lock and turn). He bought a new CT20 Turbo that he left in the vehicle when he sold it to me. I've driven it around and the only visible sign that there is something wrong to me is the sound and the smell of the exhaust. Its not super loud but it's more definitely more rough than my ears are used to. The temperature gauge fluctuated some too, moving up to the warmer side but never staying there and never hitting the "H" level. I only noticed because I'm enthralled with the digital dash and with my other cars, the level stays at normal. But after reading the owners manual, I see that the range that the gauge went through on my drives was rated as "normal". I just wondered if that fluctuation was evidence of the turbo messing with the engine temp. Sorry to be a bother, I just don't want to mess it up by driving it if I shouldn't.

You'd know if the turbo disintegrated. There are probably a hundred other reasons you could be running rough and or hot. Maybe start with a basic tune up. Oxygen sensor. That sort of thing. I wouldn't expect the turbo to get that hot, unless you are running lean otherwise.

Hey there, I apologize for the delay in communicating. I have the 4Runner and I've just purchased a rebuilt 22RTE engine for it. I'm planning on doing an engine swap next weekend but was wondering if you could give me some info about the turbo salvage in MO. I'm trying to round up the info on the Berryville salvage from my friend. I'll let you know when he responds.

Do you happen to have the phone number of the guy you know locally with the turbo parts?
