Truck making clunking sound, please help

1995 4runner v6 2wd auto.
any time i step on the gas under load (driving) it makes this clunking sound. when im at a steady speed i dont hear anything, but as soon as i try to accelerate, it makes this clunking sound. almost like an old carbed engine when it sputters. the engines performance isnt effected at all, it runs smooth and idles great. it doesnt make this sound in park or neutral, only when its under load and accelerating. i get the best (worst) sound out of it if i push on my brakes then tap the gas, it's pretty bad.

no, it's definately an engine sound, it doesnt necessarly have to do with the brakes at all, as i can duplicate the sound (although not as bad) at higher speeds, just by pressing on the gas harder

I've heard about engine mounts failing. Yup, the engine ends up sitting on the chassis. The Yota owner didn't even realize until one day while washing his rig really well and look up the passenger side wheel well.

With that in mind, take a good, good look in your engine bay for anything loose or dangling that can cause that noise.

Or, runnung with the "engine mount" diagnosis, try lifting the engine with a floor jack while you watch it's progress from underneath to determine whether or not it is a mount.

might be some excessively worn control arm bushings.

You sure it's not the driveshaft running out of lube?

I'm still promoting the engine mount, too, as it can sound like a engine or deep engine sound.

Could it possibly be that your evaporative emissions canister has clogged up and that you're getting that sound from the element inside popping up and or down as you let on or off of the pedal...,or..., that the filter in the air intake canister is clogged and/or loose and is being sucked up and/or down as you press on the pedal ???

Just trying to come up with something to help you sort it out.

The air filter is easy to check, just disconnect the intake hose and pop the three retaining clip loose and lift up on the top of the canister.

As for the charchol canister..., is yours rectangular or round?

Is there anyway that you can record the sound, then post a link to it so that we can put an ear on it?

If I were you, I'd take a different vehicle to Pismo. Since the sound is getting worse, my bet is that you may have spun a bearing or something of that nature. I'd definitely have a mechanic look at it. I would be suprised if you found metal shavings in your oil pan.

Now might be the time to trade it in before you sink a lot of money into it.

I hope you've got some cash saved up. This is going to be $$$$$. Gotta love that 3.slow. Some last, some don't. And they're expensive as hell to fix and still just as slow.

I bet you are doing this...

And then you're going to need one of these...

Is this "clunking" (as you've described it) in time with the engines revolutions and/in sequence with the pistons' movement?

i dont even know where it is or what it looks like, lol.

yes, and no.
1. it ONLY happens under load. if i have it in neutral or park, it never makes the sound.
2. yes, and it is very distinct at different rpms.
3. i just had my water pump and both idler pullies replaced, but used the same timing belt (its only about 23k old)
4. at about 3500 rpm its like a jingling sound
5. when stopped and i step on the gas it makes that clunk sound, it even makes it as soon as the engine kicks in while im starting it.

yes, this is driving me nuts

numbers 1 and 5 do not match...unless you are starting in drive.....buddie of mine has a chevy...the torque converter is has lost a bearing so now it has a shaking rattle can sound to it as soon as the trannie warms up....that start out as a clunk sound...are sure it is the engine and not a mount? or the trannie?
