Trouble with manual hubs, was I scammed?

I just bought a 89 4x4 pickup for $1,800. I don't know if I was scammed or lied to. He said it had a bad wheel bearing on the phone. I said I wanted to make sure the 4 wheel drive works. I was driving, he went to lock the hubs and said the one that "had the bad wheel bearing" wouldn't lock, it just spun. But he also told me when I was driving it the front wheel were spinning as they should. Then he said the problem/noise must be the hub and not the wheel bearing.

WELL, I just pulled off both manual hubs and there is no bolt going into the CV Axels on either side. Would the 4x4 still work without those bolts? I don;t know if it had stock hubs, they said selecto of something like that.

Also, when I turned the hub it locked just fine, he made it sound like it just kept spinning.

he maybe ment it locked but the cv spon try locking both hubs and crawling under it and spining the cvs by hand and see if they spin if they dont then there good as for the bolts im not sure but i think you do need them in there for it to work right

$1800 is a good deal regardless.

Pull the hubs and check out the wheel bearings. Not much to mess up on a manual hub and a bad wheel bearing would not mess up the hub necessarily.

Those bolts you are talking about are there to make sure that the end of the CV doesn't get dislodged. Its just a safety in case you were to really droop the tire - the CV could slip out of its splined input to the wheel and then you'd have 3WD. As I recall the bolts were not high strength units - 10mm heads I think but maybe 12.

And it looks like you are getting a very good price. Since you already have manual hubs it simplifies the whole front axle considerably.

haha, dang I thought I checked every possible thing too. I really don't care though, I bought the thing for something fun to work on. Unstuck was taken second choice.

Yeah, I'm happy with the truck I just don't like being mislead. It's been rolled but still in ok shape. The OD says 80k but I dunno if it's right. I think he was straight up with me, the hub was smashed into the part you turn and needed pliers to get it to move.

I'm not sure what all the symptoms of a bad wheel bearing are. It takes about 10 minutes of driving for it to make any noise. It's sort of a slow clicking.

Do you have to take the outermost part and all the guts first to get your hub off? Does that bolt hold the hub on?

Sounds more like a flop. I think it just went on it's side and had some roof damage also. The drivers side bed is crinckled some and the cab right behind the door handle has a dent. It needs an alignment or maybe something is bent I don't know. It goes down the road pretty straight but the caster seems to be off as I have to turn the wheels back towards center after a sharp slow turn. But he told me about all that stuff. It stills drives really well.

It turns out the hub was just stuck in lock and I was able to free it. It just scares me to be able to move the cv axels in and out 1" by hand with everything in place.

They say Selectro on them. Are those stock? Is it ok to use red RTV instead of a gasket because I did that as a temporary thing. Only where it bolts to the wheel not the part you turn.

I was worried it would just keep rocking in and out and wear the splines.

I am really happy with the truck overall I just don't like being deceived. But now I don't think he did. Did the 89s not come with manual hubs stock? This is my first 4x4. It still might have a bad wheel bearing. He had another truck just like this one, it looked like he took alot of parts off mine so I was looking for short cuts he may he taken or maybe he swapped bad parts to mine.

And maybe he does not know anything about what's wrong and his best guess is the wheel bearings when it could be something to do with the hubs.

I think you're right. Didn't seem like he really investigated the three problems he told me about, valves needing adjustment, wheel bearing-like noise, and needing an alignment.

I did the valves and they were about twice the clearance they should have been. It quieted it down alot but the ticking is still there which I gather is pretty common on these engines (22re.)

I got the hub to lock and unlock the way it should. Not seeing the bolts just made my think he slapped the hubs on half assed just to sell it.
