trouble codes and timing for 3vze

i am told a paperclip can be used to display trouble codes... and set the timing on this 94 4runner... i know i need to jumper the diagnostic port... i guess i was looking for more explanation on the trouble code thing... but i also really want to know how to set the timing... and what it should be set to on this car... any info would be great... thanks.

To retrieve codes, insert a paper clip / jumper between the E1 & TE1 terminals (should have a diagram on the inside of the lid covering the connectors) then turn the key on and count the flashes on the check engine light (CEL).

To set timing, start the engine then insert the jumper like you were reading codes. Then adjust the timing and idle speeds as necessary.

Thank you! I just reset the ecu tonite... several issues i have had as of late seem to have cleared up... I also replaced the fuel filter today... and tonite when i drove it after getting it all buttoned up it drove better then it ever has while i have owned it. I am not sure if the Ecu reset did anything or if it was the fuel filter (thick chunky black goop came out the inlet side) I dont know if maybe the cool weather here tonite made a diff but it certainly had more pep than I am used to, it sounds much healthier too. It does still seem to studder slightly when i get to about 2200 rpms... any ideas? it has pretty much new electrical, I am thinking i might have an injector that needs some tlc, Ideas?
