Trouble Checking Codes

I have read the different write ups on checking codes and this is the first time I have tried to do it. I connect a jumper (paper clip) from TE1 to E1 on my 1994 4runner auto with the 3.0. When I turn the key on the check engine light and O/D Off light flash continuously. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

when mine does that it is because there aren't any codes there. did you pull the efi fuse first??? if so you cleared the codes already so you will have to wait til the cel comes back on to re-check.

I just had my battery out and never thought about it clearing the codes. I know that is the old way of getting it to turn off. I will wait for the CEL to come back on and then try it again. Thanks Tim.
