My yoda has been dead in the garage for 2 years now. The transmission is trashed. I am trying to figure out whether to have it rebuilt (again) or find a used one and swap it. The reason the transmission is trashed is not quite clear. I've been told it needs to be re-geared for the tire size (33x12.50 with a 3 inch Pro-comp lift), but I am not sure. Money is the defining issue as far as to what I do, but at the same time I would like the transmission to have some kind of longevity. Any opinions or thoughts are welcome.

 

Since I'm pretty cheap, and it sounds like you are trying to keep it cheap,I would just get one from a lower miles v6 vehicle and swap it in. I can swap in 3 or 4 transmissions for the price of 1 rebuilt.

 

I'd swap one in too.

 

Anyone ever get a tranny off of Ebay? Just curious if it would be worth it. Found one with only 75,000 miles.

To answer your question, yes, I once got a whole truck off ebay. Still using the engine and tranny.

 

Surprised nobody mentioned this... but generally nobody rebuilds tranny ratios to deal with larger tires. The vast majority of people change differential gears... dunno if your manual or auto, but manual stock gears are 4.10 and auto is 4.88.

I hear, for a manual transmission and 33" tires, you want either 4.88 or 5.29 gears, else you'll be burning clutches something fierce. For the auto, I imagine you'd need 5.29.

Any other details as to how the transmission behaved before it died?
