So this probably has been covered on here but I can't seem to find it buy my questions are, what is the best transmission fluid for a manual transmission on an 89 pickup with a 22re and, the same question but for the transfer case? And how much goes into each? I really need to change them and want to do it this wkend. Thanks in advance.

a synthetic gear oil 80w-95 is best such as mobil one. Its pretty pricy about 11.99 a quart and u need 4.4 for tranny and transfer case together withch is close to $60 for just fluid but i change myne every 40000 miles and still comes out thick and clean. I have never used redline but heard nothing but good stuff about it. Tranny holds 3.2 QTS Transfer case holds 1.2 QTS

 

Keep in mind there is a slight difference in fluid capacity between the V6 tranny and xfer vs. the 22re.

My thoughts on the subject:

Only use MT-90 in the tranny. It's designed to have a bit of "bite" to it to allow the syncros to work better. Transfer case has no syncros so basically you want the slickest, highest film strength stuff you can. I use Redline Shockproof light weight (which is really medium in their lineup - superlight, light and heavy) but the M1 stuff mentioned above, Amsoil S2000 or Redline 75w-90 are all very, very good. I wouldn't use the M1 or Amsoil in the tranny - just too slick. Your syncros will hate you, though I guess that depends a lot on the condition of the syncros.

If you're having trouble sourcing these, a lot of sportbike shops carry these things.

 

So any MT-90 fluid will work in the tranny and can I just use the same 80w90 oil I used in my differentials in my transfer case?

 

yes mt-90 for the tranny and the 80w90 for the x-fer should be fine
