I couldn't access my old account, so I had to create a new one. I have a 1988 2wd Pickup that originally came with a G57, according to the plate (22R ext cab, long bed). The previous owner swapped in a W56, due to the G57 deciding to eat it's internals. The issue is the speedometer cable. The W56 is on the passenger side, and was electronic. It appears I can swap the trans over to a mechanical sending unit, if I can locate one, but then the cable won't reach. I'm trying to decide the best route. Repair the G57, where it bolts in, or figure out if there's a longer cable available and swap the necessary parts out. This will be my son's truck when he turns 16, so I want to have the speedometer working. Any input is appreciated.

 

there are mechanical speedometer extension cables, fwiw

wrt the trans, i'd be asking if the w56 is a better transmission than the g57, and therefore what should be used.

 

With all the W56 swap threads, which I read through tons of, the W series is better. This is a stock 2wd truck, so it doesn't see anything rough. That may change when my boy turns 16. This will be his daily ride for awhile. I just want to make the best decision, so I come to the experts. I made another thread about the G57 issues, so maybe I will get some good info there too.

 

i'm running a w56, and i think it's with one of those cable extenders on my lifted rock crawler.

save the other trans for backup?
