Transmission removal woes...input shaft siezed?!
#21
so what if it's five years old? you think that people don't use the search function?
anti seize may not melt off, which is good, but it is not a lubricant... if the pilot bearing seizes, i want lubricant in there.
on vw motors there isn't any pilot bearing for the tranny shaft to rest on, it's a bushing... that's where i got into the habit of using lubricant where things are spinning at rpm

I just installed new clutch, pilot bearing and all, less then 500 miles ago. Blew intake hose that goes around the thermostat housing, now blown head gasket. Tried pulling motor and couldn't seperate motor more then 1 1/2" from tranny. Ended up pulling both tranny and motor. I have hooked straps to motor and tranny and tryed pulling apart with no success. I don't understand how pilot bearing can stick to shaft after such a short time. I always grease tranny shaft when installing. Other then cutting hole in bell housing any ideas on how to seperate?

I've pryed, hammered, wedged. I am about to cut it. Just trying not to. Probably won't have much choice. I may be looking for a new bell housing any ways. Hit to many times with wedge and hammer. I'm in disbelief that a new pilot bearing would stick like that. It's a brand new AISIN clutch that was installed. Drove me to drinking. Ole lady told me I'm not allowed to hoook vehicles back to it.

I agree. It's confirmed, stuck pilot bearing. finally got it seperated. I used wobble extensions and swivel joint to undo the clutch from the fly wheel, by going through throw out bearing arm hole. I still need to dismount pilot bearing from tranny. I am one step closer though.

this just happend to me today, i put a new clutch with a new pilot . had a wierd vibration . did some wheeling it got worse . i thought i would have it out in record time ...but nope after 2 hours i used an inch and a half hole saw to gain access to the bolts . same deal . i did some welding on a home made trans mount ,rite on the truck i wonder if its possible ? it caused this ? i mounted flywheel by itself then just the bellhousing then starter checked for vibrations ,then added clutch and disk put back bellhousing ,,checked again seems ok so now put trans back in with a new pilot of course . i think the hole rite in the bottom is ok on mine being round , but i will put some kind of plug like rubber or ? wierd 35 years working on shtuff never even heard of this .

bad aftermarket flywheel!!
I found the problem with mine ...turned out the new flywheel was machined with 060" runout yes 60 thousands of one inch more than 10 times more than acceptable !!! i only had the trans out 5 times in 2 days ! . new rule use a dial indicator !!!
