Heres some pictures of how I have dropped and put transmissions back into our trucks. solo

Btw speedylift brand jacks are horrible.. theres nothing speedy about them. I dont remember how I got this jack but it sucks... I wish quality floorjacks didnt cost a fortune =(

BTW, removing the crossmember is entirely up to you. It's a pain to take off and put back on so Ive learned how to deal w/ it just being in the way because taking a transmission out is a tedious annoying job to begin w/. The less work i have to do the happier I am.

Also, has anybody used a slide hammer to remove a pilot bearing? I have tried the grease / hydraulic method, but all it did was blow out the bearing seals. The pilot bearing puller I rented at Advance Auto was a total POS and bent long before the bearing was going to move. I don't currently have a slide hammer, but I can pick one up from harbor freight tomorrow if necessary. Any suggestions? thanks
Just soak newspaper in water and stuff it behind the bearing find a bolt a steel rod or something that fitts the hole in the bearing and pound the bolt with a hammer against the paper occasionally stuffing more small pieces inside. Eventually itll come out

It has taken me over 10 years to change a clutch .

So maybe the pilot bearing is still in there.

Could anyone give me a tool list needed for this job, and maybe anything else I may need to do or check while the trans is out? I blew a front pump seal and figured I may as well do any other servicing that needs to be done. Thanks in advance.

Also my 4runner is a 91 4wd automatic V6 and I know absolutely nothing about it so if I'm in a bad spot on this thread could you please point me in the right direction?

How do you get the transmission back in by yourself? I spent most of the day trying. I thought I had a good idea with two jacks, but I can't get it. It was easier to rebuild and replace the engine than putting this W56 back in.

You need to jack the front of the motor up, on say the crank pulley, to get the back to come down.

assuming that the clutch disc is centered, the trans has to be in a straight line with the crank; the up&down/sidetoside both have to be right.

it's going to be hard to do that with the setup you have, can you rent a trans jack somewhere on the island?

i got this jack: http://www.harborfreight.com/2000-lb...ack-60240.html

it has a tilt adjustment, if you jack it up against the trans, and set the tilt and lock it down before pulling the trans, the install will be a breeze.

i didn't do that, but it was much easier to make fine tilt adjustments after the fact with that jack.

I just moved to Fairbanks Alaska and I tried to buy one and I'm not sure where to rent one. There aren't any harbor freight or Northern Tools.

What I used for the first 2-3 R&R

What I got after the trans fell off the above jack (and luckily missed my leg)
(I got it years ago, decades actually - I think I paid $700 back then - mine was made in the USA)

oh dang, i bet that was a big change!

google "tool rental fairbanks alaska" it looks like there might be a couple of places to call.

if the tunnel on your truck is as hacked-up as mine is, you might be able to drop a chain through it, and use an engine hoist from inside the cab?? pretty clumsy tho, you'd probably have to roll the truck back to stab the trans in.
