transmission help
i have a 1986 pickup base turbo model 4x4 with the 5 spd manual. it currently has a tranny out of an 87 pickup 4x4. what im not sure of is exactly what model it is. can some one tell me where i can find anything on it that would tell me what it is. as far as i know i think its a w56, but im not really sure and my syncro is starting to fall apart on me.

well, so id have to take it off to see how many bolts my front seal retainer has to know if its either a g52, g54, or w56... since they are all usually found behind the 22r/re, does any one know if id be able to bolt either one on and still bolt on my t-case?

Whoops, the info isn't in that link... there's a way you can decode which one you have given the info on the tag affixed to the firewall in the engine bay. I don't have my truck in front of me so I can't look at it at the moment. I'll take a look tonight.
I know there's a difference between the shifters on the W and G trannys and respective t-cases... If I recall correctly, the G series transfer case shifts via a rod that runs through the tranny and into the transfer case. So if you're going to swap from G to W, I guess you'll have to get the mating transfer case to go with it. If I'm incorrect about this, I'm sure someone will chime in.

well both shift levers sit in line with each other but are removed separately. and yes once taking the t-case stick out it has 2 rods that run back into the t-case. so does that mean i have a g series? but i should be fine tho if i get a w56 tranny w/t-case and bolt it on?

Yeah sounds like a G series. I'm not sure if the W56 is a direct bolt in (ie if the mounting holes line up) or not. I've read somewhere that if you go to a W56 you have to clearance the floor a little bit. Dunno if that's true or not.
Btw, here's the link to the tag identification:
