transmission help?

I have an automatic 22re, 4cyl, late 88, early 89 4Runner... My question is: why wont it drive in ''drive'' or ''drive 2'', but will drive in ''drive 1'' and ''reverse''? We have all of the wires hooked up correctly and have enough fluids in it.

We just installed a new (used) tranny... Any help would be awesome. Thanks

What does it do when you unplug the soleniod connector and shift manually?

It will remove computer control of the solenoids so you can determine whether you have a solenoid problem or a mechanical problem.
