Transmission codes... All in one place

I searched for a thread containing tranny codes, but had no luck. I can't look on my VIN plate because my truck doesn't have its original engine. I have an '88 with the 22RE with 4WD and a 5 speed. What tranny do I have?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there generally are not transmission codes for manual transmissions. The auto trannies are the ones electronically controlled. Chances are good that you have a W56 5 speed manual tranny.

Look here for more info:

Mike's right, you won't get trouble codes from a manual tranny, there's nothing electronic in them. The only thing that'll give a code is a bad speed sensor, and that'll show up in the 'Check Engine' light. And I'm not even sure that 88's have an electronic speed sensor

while the above is right... I'm looking at it differantly and think he may be just asking for the "code" or serial or identification of his tranny.. i can see a string of letters and numbers designating a type of tranny as a "code". Additionally he says he cant look on his vin plate for what he is looking for cuz its not original, therefore, he is not looking for a guide on tranny error codes.

that first link on 4x4wire should have good info

The link I posted earlier has both a year by year break down, along with some pictures to make a visual determination.

If the engine was swapped but not the tranny, it is my understanding that the older models had sticker on the firewall with engine/ transmission/ gearing/ tire size codes. If not a sticker on the firewall, look on the driver's side doorjamb for a similar sticker.

Yeah going by the 4x4wire link posted, I have a W56. I'm guessing that when the engine was swapped, the tranny was also, since this truck had the 3.0 from the factory, and I would assume the tranny for the 3.0 wouldn't work with the 22RE. I guess the guy I bought it from liked the 22RE better, or could replace it for cheaper, etc. I didn't really get into details with him. But my VIN plates all say 3.0 V6 haha.
