Transmission

My 86 4runner just slipped out of 4th gear on freeway. All other gears shift smoothly just will not go into 4th or OD they call it. Any helpful info greatly appreciated. Running to work in 3rd gear anin't cuttn it. Just finished replacing head gasket too. Runs awesome, don't want to blow er up.. Thanks. Richie

4 gear is "straight threw" .. meaning no countershafts , or O/D ..
if it's not "whining" , I would think it to be the sencro or the fork pads .. time for a rebuild !!

Yes its an automatic. The book calls it OD. Shifts at about 45 mph. It slipped out of 4th on freeway. I am hoping it to be just a solenoid. Have you heard anything on these trannys?
