Transfer Case Rotates
'87 x-cab 4x4 sr5 pu. Took off my driveshaft to change u-joints. While
waiting on parts to finish started engine to check over and the transfer
case shaft rotates!!! Is this normal and why? Truck was in neutral 2wd so
put it in neutral 4wd and it stopped rotating. It's the shaft collar that bolts
onto the driveshaft that rotates. Do I have a tranny problem??

No, your fine. They just do that even not in any gear. Nothing to worry about.
You should be able to grab hold of it with your hand and stop it from spinning.
When you put it in 4WD and connected it to the front driveshaft, which was connected to the front axle, which connected it to the front wheels on the ground, that then stopped it from spinning.

neutral H4 I also rotated the front driveshaft and only the driver's side
axle (cv) turned freely, the passenger side won't turn, both hubs are on
free so I think the hub is in wrong position??? if I'm not mistaken?? will look
at it this week. Am redoing an '87 for my brother. Thanks for your insight
everyone that's what makes this the best site.
