Tranfer Case Leak

i have an 87 pu, and the tranfer case is leaking right where the front driveshaft enters it. there is gear oil all over the bottom on the tcase where the drain plug is. i guess that its running down to the drain plug from the driveshaft end where it meets the tcase. any idea why its leaking, and how much and how hard to fix?

Sounds like the seal to me. Pretty much the same process as doing pinion seals (that I have done). You will need the new seal. Take the drive shaft off (may require some heat). Then remove the big nut (my front diff was 15/16 and my rear diff was 30mm...not sure what this one will be). At this point the yoke will come out. Right there is the seal then. Yank that w/ a seal puller/screw driver (I recommend a puller). Put a lil grease on the seal and gently tap it back in place. Not sure about the nut torque here. Some say tighten until no more play, some say tighten to the exact same place it was before, some say go to torque spec, while others say rebuild crush sleeves. Others will chime in soon i'm sure. Hope this helps.

Just for the record I typed this before I read your follow up. Takes time for responses sometimes.
