Yep, common maker of aftermarket t-stats:

I've also had similar results with the Motorad Fail Safe t-stat:

Had one pop and lock open and when that happens you need to replace them, so I put the 2-valve Toyota part back in and it is still going strong.

Not unless you get the special Toyota t-stat designed to eliminate that problem ( TSB: 029032787 22R-E Engine Temperature Overshoot):

I've been running the same 2-valve t-stat in my '85 for almost 10 years now, it still works perfectly and if I can get that sort of lifetime out of a part compared to only a few years out of a Stant or similar unit, I'll stick with OEM.

I replace my coolant once a year along with the t-stat. But, I also drain and replace brake fluid as well once a year. All fluid's with the exception of oil get replaced yearly actually. Tune-ups happen about every 10K. I guess what I'm saying is, I only run into issues if the part is defective. (that and I keep part manufacturers in business) Never believed in running it till it's worn out. Maybe I'll give the Toy t-stat a try again next go around.
