Towing an 89 4runner with an 06 Sequoia. Help
Hello everyone, I am Serafin and I am new here.
I'm into the tuning scene with an automotive certificate from WyoTech.
so I know my way around cars.
not so much trucks.
recently I've wanted to get into off roading.
there is an 89 4runner about 3 hours away. the guy wants some stuff I have laying around to trade for it.
so it'll literally cost me gas to acquire this 4runner.
he claims all it needs is shifting solenoids. that it only goes into reverse.
I saw a thread on here where some guy changes the solenoids. didn't seem to hard.
I need help with, is this 4runner worth the 100$ in gas and 7 hour round trip it'll cost me?
and wi I be able to tow the 4runner with an 06 sequoia?
I read the Sequoia tow rating is 6800 lbs and the 4 runners only weight 38-4000 lbs.
I should be fine towing right?
and the solenoids shouldn't be that hard to swap right?

Well, you went to Wyotech so you should have this under control........j/k man, i started at uti. the next 5-10 years of your automotive career you're gonna absolutly HATE!!! after that is doesn't get any better, you just sucomb to the fact you're a grease monkey for life and you'll die at your toolbox.
Now, on to your questions. Who the hell knows whats really wrong with that thing and who really knows what will fix it. However, if it is in overall decent shape on the outside and inside, i'd say that's a great deal!!
The sequia has more than enough guts to pull it, but thats a lot of weight to bring to a stop. I'd do it in a heartbeat, but i am a stuipid redneck. Go slow and you should be fine.
Stop being a ricer (tuner).
Now, on to your questions. Who the hell knows whats really wrong with that thing and who really knows what will fix it. However, if it is in overall decent shape on the outside and inside, i'd say that's a great deal!!

Rent a U Haul trailer with brakes.You're already money ahead.If you pass on the truck,let us know and one of us will have a new 4 runner.lol PS the trans is shot!It will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Serafin---Expanding on what Maco35 said.....If you do go to get it and you plan on flat towing it, be sure to tie the rear driveshaft up and out of the way.....don't want to ruin your auto tranny 
If you do pull the rear portion of the ds out and throw it in the back of the Runner, just make sure to make marks on the splines so you re-engage the exact same spline upon re-assembly. Keep us updated on the shift issue

I was all trigge happy about school and then I started to doubt it.
I did graduate though. I think waking up at 4 am to drive 2 hours cuz class started at 6 was what killed it for me lol. I'm in college now. looking for a diff career.
according to the guy it turns on an only reverse works.

cuz i still need to take with me to him the atv and go kart and motor scooter.
What do all of you think?
if I did my math right, it should be 90-100$ of gas

Check the frame prior to doing any kinda trades. These things ( well all toyota's ) are rust prone. Check the frame around the front spring hangers on the rearend. And around the gas tank. I'd hate to see the rear end fall out of it while your pulling it home. ( true story ) If frames good you should have something worth building.

Be sure to consider the weight of the trailer when estimating the wieght of what your pulling vs. tow capacity. Lot of people skip that step. They think since I'm pulling a 4,000 pound rig on a car trailer that all im pulling is 4,000. But most car trailers weigh 600-1200 pounds or more if you get serious.

Oh theres more. I towed my wheeling rig a couple times some short distances with my tacoma 3.4 V6. I know for a fact my wheeler weighs in excess of 4500lbs, exo cage weighs a bit, on a car trailer that I also have weighed empty at 950lbs. Making a total of 5,450lbs behind my taco. It was way to heavy for the motor to pull, did fine on flat doing 60mph but even small hills felt like the biggest hill on earth. And it swayed and felt really really heavy even with trailer brakes. Now your much better equipped power wise, so id say its fine. But that sequoia doesnt weigh much more then a lifted 4wd ext cab tacoma so it could push it around a little, just make sure the vehicle is on the trailer right providing enough tongue weight.

so I texted the guy and asked if he was still down to trade and that id pick up friday and hes all like "you have the wrong number" then like 20 min later I texted him if he still wanted to trade. I didn't get a reply. wth

I tried searching for some other ones around me.
all I find is the 4x4 4Door 4runners. which I don't want.
then also there's only the little Toyota trucks with 2wd.
what do I do?

^^^so I guess that 4runner that I posted is one of the rare ones huh?
well bad news. the freaking guy doesn't have it anymore an I was gonna go pick it up tommorow!!
I do have a 99 Toyota Camry and it is for trade. some guy is offering to trade me a 96 s10.
so I think I'm going to trade it.
it's the only to get rid of this Camry with 290k miles!! lol.
it's A/T.
of course as soon as I acquire the s10, if I do acquire it, it'll go back on the market for sale or trade for a M/T with 4x4
preferably a Toyota because I hear they are easy to lift and work with.
if I get a 1990 Toyota truck, it'd look sweet lifted huh?

I come with new questions lol.
Well being a full time student at College and trying to have a full time paying job is difficult.
So I've left it and now I flip cars.
I bought a trailer yesterday.
It's 13ft 9" Long. Double axle.
But my 2006 sequoia tow rating is only 6500.
I planned to tow 2 cars with the trailer.
One all the way up front and the second car just with 2 front wheels on the trailer.
Went out today and bought 5300 lb hooks/chains, 7500lb ball hitch, and 6000lb hitch.
My question is, what happens if I exceed 6500 lbs?
The trailer is at 1200 lbs, the cars will range from like 2600 to like 3500 lbs.
Towing 1 car shouldn't be a problem. But what if I throw 2 cars on there?
The hooks&chains should be fine at 5k lb as it will only be holding down 1 car.
The 7500 lb ball hitch seems fine, don't think I'll exceed 7500.
But what about that hitch too only being rated at 6k too?
I couldn't find a hitch for 7500.
But will all those be fine if tow about 7200-7800 lbs?
