I'm looking at a 95 4runner and I think I'm going to buy it. It has a torn CV boot though, my question is can I drive it for a while with the boot torn as long I don't put it in 4wd?

Depends on if it has manual hubs or not I think. If it does you are good to go for a while because unlocked hubs will not turn the CV's. If it does not have manual hubs it may throw grease everywhere if it already has not, and do damage to the CV possibly.

I know that MarcP ran a ripped boot on his 2nd gen while off roading by taping a plastic bag over his. No problem for him and he put new boots on the CV when he got home.

I've been driving with 2 torn CV boots for a while. My truck has ADD. I've also, had it in 4wd with no problems. I guess when it gets warm, I'll get off my but and change the axle.

You can drive it for a little while, but keep in mind there is NO grease in there.

They are pretty easy to change - I've had to do both of mine. There are a few writeups on here that will guide you through it step by step.

for the cost of replacing the shaft vs replacing just the boot, go with the new shaft. some places offer a warranty on them and they can be less expensive than the boot kit. you have to remove it anyway to repair the boot.

look in your wheel well, youll probably see grease sprayed around the liner. its not long for this world. you can replace it, then repair it and you have a spare ready to go in if another one goes on you.
