Top End Clatter at Idle

I am a pretty experienced mechanic and acquired my first Yota last week (traded a rusty Benz diesel for it) and it has been a blast other than fixing the surging idle. Today I noticed some noise in the top end.

I pulled the valve cover off and the chain guides have been upgraded to steel, so that isn't the problem. Everything looked clean so I put it back together. The noise is still there and it exists at only idle-1200 rpm or so (I need an SR5 gauge cluster lol).

I am thinking that I may need to adjust the valves. The truck has no blow-by and no smoke upon start-up so it probably isn't valve guides. Like I said, this is my first 22R-E so I am taking everything into account. The engine has had a recent rebuild and everything is clean, the rockers aren't even oil stained.

What is your experience?

Hi, welcome aboard.

Valve adjust just might do the trick. Some do say these sing like a sewing machine.

Give the Advanced Search under Tools on the tool bar above a try.

I've checked and adjusted mine a couple times in the past few months and I still have a loud one on the intake side. My plan is to go a hair tighter than factory to quiet it down when I get around to it.

You'll hear different advice on valve lash adjustments... Some say you can do it cold, others say go a bit tighter than stock, even both. You might find though, that setting them to the stock gap produces a lot of clatter. Either deal with it or set them tighter, but at your own risk!
