Too much lift?

My 95 is an automatic and I have a similar set up. 4.88 gearing was perfect for 31x10.50s and barely adequate for the 32x11.50s I'm running now. I will never go with 33" tires without making some other mods first.
For lift I have Downey HD coils (1.5" lift) and 2" spacers in the rear; the front is 1.5" ball joint spacer with a slight torsion bar crank. The lift is just enough for the trails I'm likely to encounter. Going with any more lift and a larger tire will mean I have to change gearing again. I'd rather put the money into an engine swap.

maybe i'm missing something, but i have a 4banger 22re, and i have 4.88's, and i have 33's...i calculated the gear ratio swap to run 33's, and it came out to 4.77, so 4.88 is still over geared for 33s. Thing drives like a champ, much better than stock. so why is everyone saying that its hardly enough with 32's, when they have more power than i do?

I don't know. I think my 4.56's work OK with the 33's. 4.88's might be a little better, but nothing lower than that...Of course the O/D in the automatics is so damn high that may be the problem.

The 2nd gen 4Runner is quite a bit heavier than the 1st gen. My version is heavier than stock due to all the mods and sound proofing so I'm fighting an even greater battle. I have to keep the ECT feature of the tranny on all the time in order to get decent shift points. If ECT is not engaged it's a real dog.
