Hi, I'm new here and this is my first post so I hope this is the right place. I have a '92 runner and when I'm stopping every once in a while the tires will all lock out of no where near the end of my stop, at around 5-10km/h. I don't really notice the extra drag when I'm driving but it's kind of dangerous because I don't usually continue along a straight line when it happens. I think it might be something frozen, I've checked the ebrake once and I'm pretty sure it's fine. I was wondering if it's something mechanical. It's a 5spd and I'll have it in neutral with the clutch in or out and it does it. I haven't checked if it only does it in 4wd or 2wd yet but I could if it might be related. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm pretty sure all the tires lock, I'm gonna go for a quick drive and try get it to happen again, I'll try in 2wd and 4wd and find out if it's all the tires.

 

in the snow/ice? have you flushed your brake fluid recently? Brake fluid can absorb water and cause all sorts of problems at low temps. What condition are your pads/shoes in?

 

If it's your rear brakes it could be a wheel cylinder or an axle seal leaking. Fluids on you brake shoes can cause the problem.

 

pti: would this be more age related or environmental? need to replace every so many years? this may explain a problem i had last winter than no one could figure out. thanks.

 

Yeah, I took a long drive with a lot of stops on ice and I'm sure it's the breaks now, the pads and rotors are fine but I"ll flush the fluid tomorrow and see if that helps. Thanks.

 

Your rear brakes might be out of adjustment. If the front brakes are forced to do all of the braking, you are more likely to lock up on snow/ice.

 

not to sound like a j/o, but your braking on ice, and i didnt bother to look but i dont think you have abs, so its gonna lock up, pump em.

 

abs is for the rear only didint help me at all

 

Are you talking about stopping on ice?
You just have to get on the brakes earlier. It's about 4000 lbs. It takes some distant in the ice to stop. What kind of tires do you have?

my front right locked up again in our little blizzard out here tuesday. if i get on it hard, it locks, if i'm easy it seems to slow without locking. once it warms, it's fine. brakes themselves seem fine.
