You can set it to spec, but it's likely to get thrown off as you run the engine due to the knock sensor retarding timing as you run. Knock retard is what will kill power in your engine, so you're likely to experience some real driveablilty issues.
Of course, if the knock sensor isn't working at all...then you may not have a problem...but you can damage your engine if you get serious detonation that the knock sensor would normally retard timing on...after all, that's what it's there for.

I should clarify a comment I made as well:
If your knock sensor isn't working...you WILL have a problem...what I meant was you won't have a problem setting the base timing to spec....but it's guaranteed that your timing will be off as soon as you start to drive the truck...plus, you'll waste a crap load of fuel, and possibly damage some other expensive components.

Code 52
I assume you have a 3VZE engine..If this is the case you need to replace the small knock sensor wire under the intake..Did you have a recent head job done??..Usually this code appears when that harness is disturbed..Its a millivolt circuit so the slightest resistence will trigger the code..
