timing with modded engine

I bought my truck with a 22r a few months ago and don't know much about the engine. It's been apart as evidenced by the crappy gasket maker everywhere so I don't know if there are different internals. It has a weber carb, headers, and has been desmogged. I've tried tuning the carb with moderate success but have not set the timing so it's a bit useless to tune the carb. It's running rich now, spits black smoke out of the exhaust on startup. It's also been dieseling on shut down.

How do I determine what the timing should be? I see guys posting that you need to advance a little with the weber, block off plates, etc. How do I find optimum timing with unknown engine components? Thanks.
