I want to do my timing but i dont got the cash to spend on a nice snap on or other nice timing light.. do the cheap 40 dollar ones at like kragen and those kinda stores still provide accurate readings for setting the timing? if yes i need to go to the store LOL.

long link but that is the one i was looking at from kragen just dont know if its worth it cuz i want it to be accurate i just dont care about all those extra gismos some of the others do.

 

It should be accurate , its just a inductive pick-up that fires a light at the same time the plug fires , for the most part the more expensive then the longer it will last , better materials , I have one (Mac) from 20 years ago , still works like a charm .
So dont sweat the money so much but don't go dirt cheap , get the Kragen (never heard of that hehe) , it should work fine .

 

just to check your timing, a strobe light would work. ACCURATELY. all you do is find the notch in the bottom pulley, mark it with whiteout, and go from there.

 

Usually I have found if you just clean it ............the mark is there just covered with 5 years or more of grime , I used a old toothbrush and some "Mean Green" cleaner and presto ....white mark is back , when I have had to mark them I would use epoxy enamel touch up paint for stoves and ranges , comes in a little bottle with a little brush .

 

pawn shops have great deals on used snap on, mac etc timing lights

 

the cheapo light should work the same. it wont have the special features, and usually wont be as bright so you might not be able to use it outside when its sunny, but it should still be usable.

 

If you're going to buy more than a basic timing light, get one that does inductive RPM and can offset (delay) the strobe... You're looking at less than $90.

I appreciate good tools, trust me - and buy brand names (like Makita) - but I'd never drop the kind of change you're talking about just to get that SnapOn brand... I seriously doubt that they actually build that tool anyway.
