timing issue?

94 4runner v6... im getting a very bad misfire. no CEL. did a complete rebuild, major tune-up w/ all new parts, denso and ngk to name a few. its been running a couple months till this morning the misfiring kept me from driving to work so i got out the timing light and found that my timing was retarted. jumpered it with a paperclip and set it back to 10btdc,... still misfiring. i did notice that there wasnt any change in idle speed as i jumpered it w/ the paperclip... gonna do a compression check when i have time. in the mean time, any suggestions out there.... please help, thanks

First sign is that there wasn't a difference in idle when you jumped the terminals. I would look into your tps first.

The TPS would throw a code if it was needing adjusted or replaced.

The FSM troubleshooting page states under Poor idling\Misfire:

1.Fuel quality
2.EGR system
3.Spark plug
4.Ignition circuit
5.Distributor
6.Engine coolant temp sensor
7.Compression

Check 1-4 before assuming it's a timing/distributor issue and then check 5-6 before assuming it's a compression issue.
