well i need some help, 6 months ago got the famous timing chain rattle, got new timng chain, steel guides, water pump, and new oil pump. put it all together and the small bolt under the cam snapped and oil leaked from cover after installation. truck ran fine just dripped oil from the top of cover. ordered new cover and started again.got it all back together but now have that rattle at idle that goes away as soon as the engine speed increases.i'm thinking maybe the one oil pump bolt is too tight or maybe the the pump is rattleing, it sounds like the tensioner but it is new and was working fine after i installed it.thinking of tryin the oem oil filter and heavier oil to see if that helps. any ideas would be greatly appreciated--

 

Where did the timing parts come from? I had aftermarket timing parts and metal guides in my truck. The driver's side guide (yes, a metal backed one) broke at 45K miles, which ended up breaking the chain and cover when things went south. I don't think the tensioner was working correctly, which let the chain slap the driver's side guide, which eventually broke it. I ignored the clues too long thinking that there's not enough miles on it for timing parts to be the problem. I now have my doubts the tensioner ever worked right from day one. Personally I went back to all OEM Toyota parts, but particularly the tensioner has to work right for the rest of the timing parts to last.

 

I have read on here that non-OEM guides are noisy.

the timing chain and cover were from engine builder,the water pump was oem, the oil pump from engnbldr, there was no noise when first put on with original timing cover. i just started it now and no noise on start up but after it gets warm.i think that eliminates the oil filter theory. i used a high mileage 10w30, thinkin maybe the oil too thin when warm and not enough pressure at idle on tensioner- hate to tear apart a 3rd time

 

how tight did you tighten the tensioner bolts. EB says they gotta be 12 FT pounds. Maybe they are too tight?

 

i torqued them to 12ft actually had to go out and buy new torque wrench,funny thing is there was no noise at all after first install, not til after i installed new timing cover
