I broke my plastic timing chain guide on the passenger side. My question is do I really need it? They don't look like they do anything and I plan on rebuilding it in a year so, do I?

Absolutly you need it. If you didnt have it your chain would saw right through the timing cover. Fix it right and replace them

probably. if you are replacing the right one, you should do the left as well. The left ones break regularly

I know. I WANT to but don't have enough money. I need it tomorrow morning so I can put my whole piece of crap truck back together so I can drive again. I don't want to drive 60 miles to get the same part. The timing chain was just replaced before I bought the truck (about 2 months ago) The passenger side broke...don't know which side that is...if your looking at the engine...the left...if your in the drivers seat....the right.

You need to replace the chain, the sprockets, the left guide, the right guide, and the tensioner. Anything less is STUPIDITY. You can pick up cheap timing sets at (shutter!) Kragen's or Autozone for about $60.

if you dont fix it it can wear through the timing cover, which will cause the oil/water to mix, leading to all sorts of fun problems and more$$ in the long run. and i would try and go for one like the engnbldr kit with steel guides so it wont break again like the oem ones.

I am going to rebuild the engine next year due to a 60psi cylinder anyway. I want to do it as cheap as possible now...and then I'll use the engine builder kit later. No since of wasting a perfectly good kit. It worked fine and has a new timing chain on it already...so it can hold another year that way. I am going to buy the guide and that's it...I already have the gaskets for the cover so I am all set. Unless you guys wan't to come over to my house tomorrow and either donate money or give me free parts then I am going it my way regardless. If it blows up...I honestly don't give a ...it is going to get replaced anyway...and I could always ride my motorcycle if needed.

how did it break if you are looking at the motor from the front is it the right or left one if it was the left I would be less worried then if it where the right one.

when you buy the timing kit next year buy one with the steel guide

usually when those break it means you have extra slack on the chain or your tensioner is worn out.

I might have a extra tensioner and plastic guide if you like I will look in my boxes of parts if I do I will send them to you for 8$ shipped.

lol...it's partially back together...now I just need to put the intake on.

I broke it taking the head off. I had a hard time taking it off and I am pretty sure I heard a crunch snap sound. It was the passenger side one...the curved one. I am buying the steel guide one. The one from engbldr.com.
I already bought the guide. I bought it from the dealer for $20...thanks for asking though!!!

don't take this lightly, your local parts house should have one in stock, least ways they did when the same thing happened to me a year ago
