The timing chain can be done by most people who take mechnical aptitude seriously- so no oil change monkeys need apply.
It's not by any means 'easy' but is not the most difficult thing you could face dealing with a 22re. There are no special tools needed (as long as you can loosen the cam and crank bolts).
Given that... the question of 'aftermarket kits' arises. If you can find within yourself the dedication and resolve to change the timing chain and guides every 75000 miles or so, none of the kits with metal backed guides are necessary.
So what was the question?

if you're in there, it wouldn't hurt but might not be necessary....
However with 124K on the clock, I'd do it anyways.

Ask Ted (Engnbldr) what's included in the kit. He is always willing to explain things and help.

The engnbldr kit does have it all.

However, its cheap cheap cheap china junk.

I would suggest the DOA kit, purely for switching to metal backed guides. Buy a new tensioner from Toyota, as the new aftermarket ones are made of a soft material that doesn't last very long.

If I were you, before you do the timing chain. Get a stethiscope and listen. Even if you know beyond a doubt that what this noise is, good practice. Harbor freight has them for <$8.

Edit: Yes EB kits are complete w/ steel guides and I'd do the water pump at same time.

EB kit is a good kit. complete, their ebay kits come with new cover to. but i think if u call Tod (not Ted).. Ted is the dad =) you have to ask for a new cover

anyway, its not a terribly difficult process but just tedious. You need to drop the oil pan which requires dropping the front differential.

goodluck =-)

I've got the EB metal backed guides in mine.
I recommend changing the water pump while you're in there
