Timing Advance on 3vze

For those who have advanced the timing from the stock 10 BTDC to something else, I'd appreciate it if you could answer a few questions:

1) What did you advance the timing to?

2) How long have you had it in this advanced state?

3) What grade of gas do you run and what have you noticed with respect to pinging and such?

4) How was the power increase and where was it? How did the timing advance change your power band? Did you pick up more power down low and lose some up high or did you pick up power overall?

5) What other mods do you have?

1) 15 degrees

2) Over a year

3) Ran 89 for fear of pinging. Recently filled up on 87 during the hottest month of the year and I have no pinging to report. So 87 is good to go.

4) I feel like it increased power over the entire range.

5) AFM two clicks leaner. Whodathunk two clicks leaner, 15 degrees btdc, and 87 octane in 100F+ temps would work?? haha. Also, custom intake with K&N (3" straightish steel tube to TB). No EGR + faked EGR with resistor. Half the vacuum system removed. No dashpot on the TB. No cat, 2.25" Magnaflo.

Need to do another dyno run, because it's running really strong right now. Maybe when it cools down to around 70F around here. FYI, dynoed at 125rwhp with the above mods, but with a leaky exhaust pre-O2 sensor (which made it run much worse than it does now).

I think I advanced mine to 12 but I'm not sure if it made a huge difference. I have no other mods on the engine. I advanced mine so it would perform better whenever I go skiing and drive the 4runner up to as much as 8000 feet.

I might try to play around with it a little bit whenever I get the engine back together again.

Question: If you get pinging, is it easy to hear or pick out, or is that something you really have to listen for to recognize?

About 12* - maybe more, it's on the edge of the marker plate.

Not sure

85 (would be 87 if we weren't at altitude), not much pinging - only at really high altitudes

Not much over 10*, but a TON over 0* when I bought it!

Stock as a rock (well, engine wise)

1. 17* BTDC

2. For the past 8,000 miles (6 months approx)

3. 93 octane only (im at sea level & ave temp is 85-95*F) No ping at all

4. Hard to say on power when warm really. Although when the temps drop below 80*F there is a DEFINATE power increase from 3000rpm on up.

5. 1mm oversized intake & exhuast valves, PNP on the heads, cams, FIPK, HiFlow Cat, 2.25" cat back w/hi flow turbo muffler. (She runs very very well despite having 1 cylinder below 100 psi and the rest at 145psi)

Yes Im building another 3vz-e so compression numbers on the new engine should be in the 200s.
