Unhappy Ticking from the engine compartment...

My runner is ticking from the engine compartment...
I'm curious whats causing it, I was hoping maybe someone could rule out some things with my description...

It ticks only when there is load, when I am out of gear and rev the engine there is no ticking. Only when I am accelerating in gear... I'm told it could be an exhaust gasket, or valve clearance needing to be adjusted... it's a 95, 3vze, 3.0L... any help would be appreciated... what do you recommend I do, I'm not a mechanic. Do places do free diagnostics?

Also anyone have recommendations for mechanics in the Williamsburg/Newports News Virginia Area?

if it's only under load, it could POSSIBLY be a rod bearing beginning to go. Unless the ticking you're describing is spark knock, in which case your ignition timing is advanced too much.

I'm pretty sure thats the problem... I had 4 injectors replaced recently.. is it ok for them to tick... or does it need to be looked at?

This makes the most sense since it every time alot of fuel is going to the engine.

Mine have ticked since I bought the truck in 2000 w/ 92,000 miles on the odo. I sent them all off for cleaning recently (www.witchhunter.com) and they all came back with a clean bill of health.

I'm curious what they charged you for injectors; they are like $190 eaach from the dealer!

Were the injectors you got rebuilt OEM? That's cheap for 4.

are exhaust leaks important to fix?

Also it hard to listen to the engine to find the leak since the truck has to be moving... =(

anyone have a 3zve exhaust diagram?

I'm gonna agree with the exhaust leak diagnosis...
Check the x-over pipe and Ydown pipe where the two sides come together.. maybe even a bad exhaust gasket

Exhaust leak, or a vacuum line is broken/came off.

To check for an exhaust leak get some seafoam, it will smoke like crazy outta the exhaust and you can find it this way. It also cleans out engine gunk..

My 94 V6 4runner makes the same sound. Are you saying the ticking is an exhaust leak? OR is that just something else you heard?

Most 3vze ticking is simply injectors; I don't know about the 22re. The wav file he posted sounded like an exhaust leak to me.

4x of the exhaust leak. Is it more noticeable when it is cold? Most exhaust leaks, especially exhaust manifold leaks, are louder when it is cold. When the vehicle warms up and things expand, the leak is often less noticeable. From what I can tell it sounds like an exhaust manifold.

My 87 does it and its a leak about an inch long in the front of the ex manifold. Im scared to try and change it and break the bolts off. 2 of 3 are on the heat shield as it is.
