Throttle positioning sensor

Measures voltage & resistance, among other things.

That one has auto-ranging - as a beginner, you should look for one with that feature. Its only $18 with free ship - thats a very good meter at that price.

Is not.
Get yourself a small 90 degree / right angle phillips screw driver then....
With the engine running, put the jumper in the diagnostic plug, loosen the TPS then rotate the TPS one way until the idle speed jumps up, then rotate it the other way until just when it drops down. If the idle doesn't jump up, forget that and rotate it til the idle drops. You just have to be sure that the idle "just" drops. If you're not sure because things move too much, tighten the screws barely tight enough so you have to 'tap' on the TPS to move it.
That's a lot easier than removing the throttle body, considering you don't have to replace the gasket, loosen vacuum and coolant hoses, etc.

The technique you suggest, abe, does sound easier than removing the TB. On the veezy, if you want to use feeler gauges to adjust the tps as directed in the fsm, you really have to remove the TB. Not sure whether that's true with the 4 cyl.
Anyway, the important thing is that IDL & E2 have continuity when throttle is closed, and do not have continuity when its open.

Guess I should add that if the idle doesn't change whichever way you move the TPS, then you have a problem with the TPS and/or the wiring... and maybe the ECU...
or...
... you didn't insert the jumper properly.

I tried doing the TPS adjustment the way it is mentioned on the FSM, but I was never able to do it. Finally after reading this thread and reviewing, Abecedarian's method, I was able to set it correctly, and boy what a difference. My truck runs way smoother now.
If I ever get to meet Abecederian, I am going to have to buy you a beer. You helped me out on at least three different occasions, when I was stuck. Thanks for sharing all your information on here!
