Mine has your symptoms, but goes away after it warms up. All parts are new, well under 5k. Sounds like your slave since it is leaking, and I don't think you bench bleed the slave, just the MC, but I could be wrong.

I know how you feel. I lived in Shreveport, LA for a few years (and Bossier City too). Worst 3 years of my life.

-edit-
today was sort of cold, but in the 20s. I let the truck warm up fully and the only thing I noticed was the whirring noise, and it was faint and not as it was. No problems slipping or changing gears.

I have not replaced the slave yet, I'm doing that tomorrow.

if you got oil on your slave cly. its is leaking around the seal and not building pressure in the slave so you will not be able to go into gear.. (how i know is becuase i changed out clutch, master cly and slave on side of the road.. with car whipping by at 70 mph.. its good to keep a jack and jackstands in the bed you never know.. i was just lucky to get a ride to autozone..

make sure you get a vacum... it will keep you from rebleeding in a week after you complete the job..

You did a clutch on the side of the road? The clutch is one of those things that, on my truck, looks easy. On my suzuki sidekick it was pretty low to the ground which made the job difficult. We also had no idea there was a dirt guard down there which kept us from separating the bell housing. On this truck, I feel like I can do the clutch in a few hours. Just glancing around under the truck and reading clutch posts on yotatech, it seems like an easy job.

yes i've done a clutch on the side of the road.. but changing a tire on the side of the road and getting shot at is a totally different experence.. all the extra pavement made it possible.. seprating the engine from the tranny can be a pain in the ass some time it kinda just fuses together.. but that can be all prevent by putting a light coat of grease around the bell housing. i was luckly to have my buddy of mine help me out after a phone call.. it was alot cheaper then paying for a tow dolly from uhaul or getting a tow truck.. bill for 400.00 bucks..

Don't know that I'd want to do a clutch on the side of the road... I'd be afraid some idiot would run into the back of the truck or run over my ankles.

I replaced the slave cylinder. I'm still getting the whirring noise when in first and second gear and it's at a high RPM decelerating. Should I start a new thread for this sound I'm hearing?

The sound is hard to describe. It sounds like an electronic servo that is stuck turned on. It's a winding whining noise. If I'm going down the road and downshift, and I'm at 2500 RPM and let the clutch engage while in gear, I hear the whining and it winds down with the speed.

Have you checked the fluid levels in the transmission/transfer case?
It sounds like a noise I had before I drained and replaced the fluid with fresh (synthetic) oil. I still get a noise now and then when it is extremely cold out but it goes away once the oil is up to temp.

Fluid is next, and I was going to replace the fluid last night, but couldnt find the dang fill plug. My main goal was to get the slave off, so I didn't look hard, but I did look enough for the fill plug and couldn't find it.

What socket size you you need to drain the transmission oil? Once again, the chilton manual has failed me, as it doesn't specify the size and the FSM I have doesn't say.

I think it's a 17mm but I'm not sure been a while since I messed with mine.
The drain plug is on the bottom about middle of the skid plate IIRC. The fill plug is on the back about half way up.

21mm is the biggest I have and it's too small. It looks like it may be a 24 or 25mm, but I'm looking for some confirmation before I buy a socket.

Tranny is a pain to fill, i run a tube down through the engine bay, with a funnel at top, fill with 3.0 L of gear oil and go have a beer. Its slow going. Or the hand pump.
