Thinking about new tires.

My '92 4Runner has 4.56 gears. I was thinking of either putting 31/10.5, 31/11.5 , 32/10.5, 32/11.5 size tires on the stock 15" rims. What would be the best combination so as I'm not to lose any power? I will not be adding a lift. Also does tire width effect anything? Main purposes for driving is half and half, urban purposes and off-roading purposes such as hill climbing and forest trails. Any comments would be appreciated. G'day.

Welcome to Yotatech.

It depends on what kind of transmission you have...manual or automatic. Also, your motor....4 or 6 cylinder. But, there are hundreds of threads on this with a lot of information. Try a search on tire sizing and see if that helps at all.

Here's one thread...

Stick with no more than 31x10.50 to keep your power & you'll have no issues wth stock suspension. I've been running 31x10.50 for years on my pickup. I recently added 17" rims & 265/65 tires (they were cheap), but as soon as they are worn out, I'm replacing with 31x10.50, maybe 11.50 (can't find anyone who makes them in a 17" tire, but I figure that's just a matter of time with everyone upgrading to larger rims). I had to screw my steering stops out about a turn to stop minor rubbing of the anti-sway bar at the back of the front wheel.

Agreed. I don't see any real advantage to going from 31s to 32s, except they look cool. ;-) I'd stick with 31x10.50s.

And welcome.

I say go for 31x11.5's or 12.5's. I think the wider tire definatly made a difference to me when I went from 31's to 33's. As far as power goes I'm running a horrible 3.0 with a 5speed and 4.56's and I see no problem with my vehicles pep. Infact I dont think it changed at all since I had the 31's on it. I'm gonna keep the 4.56's with the 36's but we'll see how long that lasts...

I think 32's are a waste. You will have more fitment issues with a 32x11.50 (the common size) than with a 33x10.50, which is what I would recommend. It is certainly driveable/liveable with 4.56's with the manual tranny, but I did noice a difference when I went to 4.88's. I probably wouldn't have regeared, but I was in there anyways putting in lockers, so it was an opportune time.

31x11.5 is my opinion. the difference between the 10.5 and the 12.5 is the look and the weight.

My 4Runner is a 5spd Vsixer. So I am leaning towards either the 31x11.5's or the 32x11.5's. I prefer the wider tire because it looks better and it would probably help in traction. Would either of those fit without having to worry about rubbing?

Get 31x10.5 Yokahama Geolander A/T's, or if you want the more agressive look get the M/T'S. They are a great tire for the price. Bfg's are too exspensive in my opinion.

With a stock suspension, you're going to have issues with larger than 31x10.50. Do you intend to wheel it much? If not, the taller/wider tires won't do much for you. They will also make your fuel mileage go into the toilet.

I run 32x11.5 s on my 4runner with no fitment issues (before or after OME suspension). I also have the 4.56 gearing, and looks-wise i like the 32s. No huge improvement over the 31x10.5s that came stock on the truck though...

I opted for the BFGs because there was some sale going on them, so they were cheaper than the Yokos, but if i had it to do over again, i would go for the Yokos.

On the pickup i used to have, i did have some issues with anything larger than 31's in the back.
