Recently we've been getting into the low to mid 80's here in So-Cal and my fan seems to stay on all the time but only when it's hot out and I am running A/C. Temps don't get hot or even close and the radiator is fairly new. Could A)The Thermostat be not working right causing the fan clutch to engage? or B) Fan clutch on the way out ? It won't do it as much if I drive at night but during the middle of the day above 80 degrees out it runs constantly.

 

Try cleaning the middle part of the fan clutch. It's where the metal coils toward the center.

 

If the thermostat was bad your truck would be over heating. On hot days the fan is going to be engauged more, and when running the A/C.

A fan clutch can wear out like any other part. When I got my 86 4Runner I had to replace the fan clutch because it was leaking oil. I found a good used one and replaced it and I havn`t had any other problems with it.

 

ah, ok so the fan clutch will engage more if the A/C is running as well on these trucks?

 

The fan clutch is simplicity itself. All it does is "measure" the temperature of the air coming through the radiator assembly. Which includes the A/C condenser. So, yes, when you run the A/C the fan should run more often; maybe all the time.
