Testing for Vacuum Leak

Hi folks,
(I searched what to use to check vacuum leaks but could not find a relevant thread)

I am dealing with two things that I do not think are ideal:
  1. At idle, the 1986 4Runner shudders. Does not stall but shudders. When AC is turned on, the idle rises as expected and the engine runs smoother (less vibration/shudder).
  2. Upon cold-start (first thing in a San Diego morning- BRRR- LOL!), our 2007 Corolla idles at 2000 RPM for a few seconds, then eventually stabilizes around 800 RPM after less than a minute. Not sure if 2000RPM for a few seconds is normal, so would like to know your experience if you have a 2003-2008 Corolla. I am aware of the TSB for the intake gasket on the 2003-2008 Corolla.

Therefore, I want to check for leaks on the Corolla AND clean VAFM of the 4Runner. Most people use carb cleaner for checking leaks. However, I want to be more environmentally-friendly and to minimize inventory of stuff(I do not have a garage). Instead of buying both carb-cleaner AND MAF cleaner, could I simply buy MAF cleaner- and use it to lightly spray around suspect leak areas like one would carb cleaner?

TIA,
RAD

I've used carb cleaner. Not sure if MAF cleaner would work.

Red face

Your Corolla sounds like it idles a tad fast but could just be the tach.

Both my 3.4 go into high idle like that to the temp sensor gets to 187 degrees then drop to normal

If the MIL is not tripping your fine.

Look to see if Maf sensor cleaner is flammable .

After looking for a good 20 minutes I can`t find the case I thought I had.

But did find a case of contact cleaner so it was not a wasted search.

In all my years I never did the spray method.

Diesel starting fluid works well, and often can be got for cheaper than other aerosols.

I've also heard of using an unlit propane torch to search for vacuum leaks. Probably as good and safe as anything else, and pretty easy to poke into tight spots. By definition, you have to use something that's fairly flammable. Regardless, I'd do the procedure outside so fumes don't collect.
