AT/TC question

Hey folks,

88 4runner, with an automagic...

Pulled my rear driveshaft earlier this week to have some work done on it - locked the hubs tossed her in 4hi and been driving as a front wheel drive. Then I found an issue I'm not fond of - once engine is turned off, transfercase seems to slip into 2hi - result is vehicle trying to roll away.

Not too fond of this situation - explains a few slides while parked on the trail... E-brake of course is siezed, gotta deal with that, but still not comfortable with the lack of maintaining 4wd within the tcase.

Is this a design thing? Part(s) failure? Is there a swap or fix I can do to eliminate this? (Manual swap is out - permanently buggered left knee; as much as I love em, can't drive em anymore)

Thanks in advance,

Andy

If your Tranny/Transfer is the A340H, then that's normal. The transfer case is hydraulically controlled. When you shutdown the engine, you lose fluid pressure, so you lose 4WD.

Would any of the other toyota tcases bolt up, and eliminate the problem?

The transfer case on the A340H is married to the main transmission. I have heard of kits that will allow a swap to a manual transfer case, but from my understanding, it's not an easy thing to do.
